A number of people have asked about the implications of using plastic bags on the personal carbon footprint as well as on the environment in general. There are some comparisons between paper bags and plastic bags available which clearly show that it all depends on how many times these plastic or paper bags are being used.

Littering is probably the severest problem related to plastic bags. Nevertheless let's now have a look at the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the production and incineration of plastic bags.

A cow does on overage release between 70 and 120 kg of Methane per year. Methane is a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide (CO2). But the negative effect on the climate of Methane is 23 times higher than the effect of CO2. Therefore the release of about 100 kg Methane per year for each cow is equivalent to about 2'300 kg CO2 per year.

As global warming is the issue of much concern, I just wonder why are there are not much effort put on prepared to be adapt to whatever condition that may arise. Today people are educated more, invent more luxirious things, learn to live in modern life and so fort. But the effects of global warming is said to be fast as predicted. I beleive this fast effects will be very disastrous. People will be caught in surprise. One of such example of unpreparedness is continuos using of air condition and refrigerator.

One of the few pros of nuclear power is the relatively low emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the major causes of global warming. For this reason, it has been proposed as "the" method to mitigate the effects of climate change. However a recent life cycle analysis showed that nuclear power produces 4 to 10 times higher CO2 emissions per kWh electricity than renewable energies.

Current discussions about possibilities to mitigate the effects of global warming have also opened discussions about a potential revival of nuclear power. In this context, it is often argued with very low cost of electricity from nuclear power plants. This seems to be one of the strongest arguments in favor of atomic energy. Summary of Eurobarometer survey published on March 13, 2008. The report shows that Europeans are increasingly aware of the role played by the environment in their daily lives. More than 95% of European citizens feel that it is important to protect the environment. Some 80% also feel it influences their quality of life and consider that they have a role to play in protecting it. Climate change (global warming) tops the list of Europeans' environmental concerns, followed by pollution and man-made disasters.

A majority are also uneasy about the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture.

With continued population growth, increased per capita consumption, and anticipated climate change, the global water situation appears bleak. Since water scarcity is a highly localized issue determined by regional climatic and demographic factors, a single solution will not solve all of the world's water scarcity problems.

However, improved management, more water efficient technologies, and support for the world's most vulnerable countries and ecosystems will likely play leading roles. According to the UN-backed World Commission on Water, coping with water scarcity will require global investment of $100 billion per year. Willingness to invest this sum will be vital to the future of human well-being and economic development in all countries of the world.

It's about the aging "theory" of CO2 being deemed a poison that is making out climate spiral out of control. This has been predicted for 25 years now. Yes, the theory has been predicting the dangerous effects of CO2 on our climate for a quarter of a century. I still shovel snow, go to Fla. to get warm every year, pay heating bills and ski a lot. This is obviously a cultural issue, not scientific and the growing debate is coming to a head as our planet cycles into another unexplainable cool trend. Recently record cold temperatures have been set. That was NOT predicted.

Nuclear Power is obvioulsy the way foward out of the current, and continually mounting, energy crisis. As of now (Feb 2008) it is the most efficient source of producing the mass quantities of energy that are demanded by the lifestyles and needs of today.

Comment from the editor: Most efficient? Less than 1% of the Uranium power is converted into electricity in a nuclear power plant. This is indeed very inefficient!

While I personally don't agree with the right-wing political bias of the film, this free movie does a great job of breaking down the scientific reasons why many people are skeptical of the CO2 hypothesis. I'd recommend watching it to get all takes on the issues, then doing independent research before making up your mind.

An official study from the German government shows the risk of getting cancer is significantly increasing for small children growing up in the neighborhood of a nuclear power station. This is in particular true for leukemia, a special case of cancer.
